Instagram Templates & Interactive Buttons

Build, duplicate, and manage reusable message templates with interactive buttons and postback actions using the Instagram Template Library in Kipps.AI.

The Templates tab (located at /instagram/templates, powered by the Instagram Template Library) is your workspace's central repository of pre-built, interactive responses. These templates standardize outbound messaging and power the automations assigned to your posts and reels.

1. Why Use the Template Library?

Instead of typing repetitive copy or hardcoding links into individual posts:

  • Centralized Management: Update a link, coupon code, or phone number in one template, and every post using it reflects the change immediately.
  • Interactive Buttons: Go beyond plain text by adding clickable web links and interactive quick-reply actions.
  • One-Click Duplication: Duplicate proven templates to quickly create seasonal variations without starting from scratch.

2. Template Categories (used_for)

Every template in the library is assigned a specific operational category:

CategoryChannelTypical Purpose
DM Reply (dm)Private Direct MessageStandardized FAQ answers, booking confirmations, or onboarding replies sent in direct message chats.
Comment → DM (comment_to_dm)Private Direct MessageAutomatically sent to a commenter's direct inbox when they engage with a specific post or reel.
Comment → Comment (comment_to_comment)Public Comment ThreadAutomatically posted publicly under a user's comment to acknowledge their input or announce a DM delivery.

3. Message Formats & Button Types

Templates support two message formats:

Plain Text

A clean, text-only message supporting emojis and line breaks. Ideal for public comment replies and casual, direct messaging.

Button Messages

A structured message card comprising a message body and up to 3 interactive buttons.

Each button can be configured with one of two action types:

  1. URL Button (url):
    • Opens an external web destination inside Instagram's in-app browser.
    • Example: Shop Sale pointing to https://yourbrand.com/sale.
  2. Postback Button (postback):
    • Sends a background payload back to the agent when tapped by the user, allowing the agent to trigger follow-up conversation flows.
    • Example: Talk to Agent with payload ACTION_HUMAN_HANDOFF.

4. Managing Templates

From the Templates dashboard, you can perform full lifecycle management:

  • Create Template: Click Create Template to open the builder modal. Enter a template name, select the category (used_for), select message format, write the body, and add buttons if applicable.
  • Edit Template: Click the Edit icon on any template card to modify copy, update destination URLs, or adjust button titles.
  • Duplicate Template: Click the Copy icon to duplicate any existing template. A new template titled [Name] (copy) is created instantly.
  • Delete Template: Click the Delete icon with popconfirm confirmation to safely remove obsolete templates.

5. Using Templates in Post Automations

Templates built in the Template Library directly feed the Posts automation workflow:

  1. When you configure an Instagram post or reel in the Posts tab:
    • The Comment → Comment selector displays all templates categorized as comment_to_comment.
    • The Comment → DM selector displays all templates categorized as comment_to_dm.
  2. Selecting a template assigns it to the post in a single click, eliminating manual copying and pasting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Instagram templates require Meta pre-approval like WhatsApp templates? No. Unlike WhatsApp message templates, which must be submitted to Meta for business review and approval, Instagram templates in Kipps.AI are internal message layouts that can be created, edited, and used immediately without delay.

Can I use both URL buttons and postback buttons in the same template? Yes. You can add up to 3 interactive buttons per button-type template, mixing external url destination links with postback action triggers.

What is the difference between a url button and a postback button? A url button opens an external web link in Instagram's in-app browser (ideal for checkout links, calendar bookings, or resource downloads). A postback button sends an automated payload string back to the agent (ideal for menu selections or human escalation triggers).

If I edit a template, will it update on all posts using it? Yes. Posts link to templates by reference ID. When you update the body copy or button URLs of a template in the Template Library, all posts assigned that template automatically use the updated version on future comments.
