Connect an MCP server to a voice agent
Add a remote Model Context Protocol server so a Voice Agent can discover and use its tools automatically during calls.
The MCP Server function connects your Voice Agent to a remote Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. The agent discovers the server's tools automatically and uses them during a call. You do not define each tool yourself.
Use it to connect services that publish an MCP server, such as a calendar, a notes workspace, or your own custom server.
Before you begin
You need the URL of a remote MCP server that is reachable over HTTP, and any headers or query parameters the server requires, such as an authorization header.
Add an MCP server
- Open your Voice Agent and select Functions in the sidebar.
- Select Create Function.
- Select MCP Server.
- Fill in the form.
- Select Save.
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Name | A name for the server. It must be unique for the agent. |
| URL | The MCP server URL. It must be a valid URL. |
| Description | Optional. What the server is for. |
| Timeout | How long Kipps.AI waits for the server, from 1 to 120 seconds. The default is 5. |
| Headers | Optional name and value pairs sent with each request, such as an authorization header. Select New key value pair to add one. |
| Query Parameters | Optional name and value pairs added to the end of the URL. |
When you select Save, Kipps.AI first tests the connection. If the test fails, the form shows an error such as "Could not connect to the MCP server. Please check the details and try again." and does not save the server. Fix the details and save again.
How the agent uses the server
The agent connects to the server and loads its tools. During the conversation the agent decides when to call a tool, using the tool names and descriptions the server provides, and then explains the result to the caller.
Write clear instructions:
The agent only sees the server's own tool descriptions. If a tool should run in specific situations, say so in the agent's instructions on the AI tab.
Manage the server
The Functions page lists the server with the type MCP Server. Select the edit icon to change it. The form tests the connection again when you select Update. Select the delete icon to remove it.
Troubleshooting
The form will not save and shows a connection error. Check the URL, headers, and query parameters. Confirm that the server is online and accepts requests from the internet. If the server is slow to answer, raise the Timeout.
The agent does not use a tool. Confirm that the server exposes the tool, and mention in the agent's instructions when to use it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I connect more than one MCP server? Yes. Add each server as a separate function with a unique name.
Which transports are supported? Remote servers that use streamable HTTP. A server that runs only on a local machine is not supported.
How is this different from an API function? With an API function you define one request and its attributes. An MCP server provides a set of tools that the agent discovers automatically.
