Create or update variable node
Extract values from a conversation with AI and save them to the contact's standard or custom fields in a workflow campaign.
The Create / Update Variable node uses AI to find values in the conversation before it, such as a preferred time or a budget, and saves them on the lead's contact. Later nodes can then read those values, for example to branch on them or write them to a sheet.
How it works
- The node reads the transcript of the step before it, the result of that step, and the data that is already known about the lead. It also gets the current date and time, so it can turn "tomorrow" or "next Tuesday" into a date.
- For each variable you name, the node writes the value it found onto the contact. A standard field such as Email is updated. Any other name is stored as a custom field.
- A value that the AI doesn't find is left empty and isn't written. The node never overwrites a field with an empty value.
- The node runs only while the campaign is Active.
Add the node
Open the Logic & Data group in the left NODES panel and drag Create / Update Variable onto the canvas. Connect it after the step that holds the conversation, such as a Phone Call node. Double-click the node to open the Configure drawer.
Configure the node
| Setting | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Node Name | A name that describes the step, for example save-preferred-time. |
| Variable Names | The fields to fill. Select First name, Last name, Email, Phone number, or a custom field, or type a new name. You can add several. |
| Scope | Fixed to Contact. The values are saved on the contact. |
| Extraction Prompt | What to extract. The default is "Extract these values from the previous conversation with the contact." |
Make the prompt specific. For example: "Extract the date and time the customer prefers for a visit, and the number of people attending."
A standard field rejects values that aren't valid for it, such as an email address in the wrong format, and that variable counts as failed.
Outputs
The node has three outputs. When you name several variables, the output reflects the combined result.
| Output | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Extracted | At least one value was saved into a field that was empty. |
| Adjusted | Values were saved, and all of them replaced an existing value. |
| Failed | No value was saved, because nothing was found or the node hit an error. |
Troubleshoot
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| The node ends on Failed. | The conversation didn't contain the value, or a standard field rejected it. Name each variable in the prompt. |
| The value is wrong. | Make the prompt more specific, and check the transcript of the previous step. |
